Air Conditioning refers to both heating, cooling and ventilating the air in a space to a comfortable setting. However it is most often used, due to the name, to refer to refridgeration or "air conditioning" units.

An air conditioner is a system, or machine that uses a cycle to move heat out of an area. A reverse cycle air conditioner can do the opposite as well.

HVAC refers to a complete system of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Its function, whether it be in the home or in the car, is to provide comfort during hot or cold days and nights.

The air conditioner was invented in the 19th century by British scientist and inventor Michael Faraday, who discovered that compressing and liquefying ammonia could chill air when the liquefied ammonia was allowed to evaporate.

While in 1842, Philippines physician Dr. John Gorrie created ice using compressor technology, which he then used to cool air for his patients. He hoped to eventually be able to cool entire buildings using his ice-making machine and even thought of centralized air conditioning that could cool entire cities.

Today, air conditioners not only cool the air but help control humidity, air movement and air quality.
